Hot Wheels Unleashed review

For a kid, I had a ton of springs. I was even one of the lucky ones to have a carpet with a street pattern in the room. Recently, it even turned out that I still have some cars somewhere, including some from McDonald’s. I had some memories and I got information about the upcoming premiere of Hot Wheels Unleashed. It couldn’t be just a coincidence, so I grabbed the rain, the springs in my pocket, and went to the Hot Wheels races.

Spring trees in a hand

Hot Wheels Unleashed is a racing game with springs facing each other. It is a product licensed from one of the most popular manufacturers of small cars. The whole game is a kind of tribute to Hot Wheels and collecting springs is just as important here as racing them.

The basis of the fun here is racing in the arcade version. This is one of the easiest racing games to learn, because we only use a few buttons. We have gas, brake, turbo and that would be it really. Braking while turning allows us to drift and the right analog stick helps to steer the spring during the flight. That’s it. However, this should not be considered a disadvantage. The title is simply very accessible and can be mastered in a few moments. Of course, there is also room for practice, because good drifting and knowing when to use the turbo quickly become key to success in racing.

I’m going to town

The main single player game mode is City Rumble. It is a network of interconnected races and tasks for which we are rewarded with various items and coins. The aim of the game is to defeat 5 bosses and discover all the secrets on the level map. City Rumble is a mix of regular 3-lap races, single-lap races, and challenges where we have to complete a lap below the allotted time. Boss fights are races on more twisted maps, where we have to be careful not to fall off the track. This mode is not overly complex or too long, but it introduces us to the game well.

In addition to this option, we also have single races, clashes against time with rankings, as well as multiplayer. We can play both online and on a split screen. The split screen is only available for two players, and the online multiplayer doesn’t offer too many options. However, I had no problem finding people willing to race over the Internet.

Fun in the basement

One of the weirdest options for this game is the so-called basement. This mode allows us to modify the elements of our car fan cave. At first, I thought it was a very illogical and redundant patent that serves somehow. This is not the level of the Forza cycle, but we have an influence on the colors of individual parts of the spring, as well as the material from which they are made. This gives you quite a few options, and the effects of creating skins for vehicles are rewarding.

There is also a system for creating routes in our basement. This is something very easy to learn and reminds me of creating skateparks in the Tony Hawk Pro Skater cycle. We simply arrange the race route from ready-made bricks. It works quite well and doesn’t require any knowledge or any talent to create. We can make the routes available on the Internet to other players. It is similar with the skins of the vehicles we create. I have the impression that the community building aspect is supposed to be a big part of the game itself. And if it does, there will be something really remarkable with Hot Wheels Unleashed.

Arcade full mouth

Hot Wheels Unleashed is one of those racing games where we push the throttle and don’t worry about anything. I like productions of this type, because they are a nice springboard from more technical productions like Forza or Gran Turismo. In addition, we have a decent driving model here, which is often a problem in more arcade games without Mario, Crash or Sonic. Therefore, I am really positively surprised by this title. It may not be an extraordinary production, but Hot Wheels Unleashed has a lot of potential and you can have fun with this title.

Lootbox parade

Of course, it could not do without its flaws. The game itself is pretty good in all respects, and I don’t have much to cling to. Unfortunately, I have the impression that the vehicle acquisition system is terrible. First of all, we have lootboxes and an additional store with the rotation of available springs. A warning light went on in my head right away. I am one of those who are always suspicious of solutions of this type. Fortunately, at the moment the only currency to pay is coins earned for winning races. Each box with a random car costs the equivalent of winning approximately 10 races. This means that it may take us a long time to get all 60 vehicles. It turns out to be a little worse. The bricks come in a variety of rarity versions. We can find this car in a common and ultra collector’s version. Thanks to this, getting all the springs can be a real chore. There is of course the aforementioned shop, but we have machine rotations in it and only a few are available at the same time. Prices are also much higher and the ride costs more than twice as much as a lootbox.

The developers have long-term plans to support Hot Wheels Unleashed

I understand that the goal here is to encourage players to spend as much time as possible on the game. Unfortunately for me, it looks like an implementation of terrible free to play mechanics in a game that we have to pay for.I was pissed myself when it turned out that the third lootbox I bought gave me a repeat of the car I owned. There is of course an option to sell a duplicate, but then we get less coins than we spent on the vehicle drawing. I may be nervous, but such a system just made me nervous. In addition, we also have paid DLC, season passes and other goodies, but I will not talk about them, because I just do not know exactly what they will offer players. It’s a real pity, because for me this system is such an ugly stain on the game, which is solid and guarantees a lot of fun.

This game has potential

As of today, it’s a little hard to judge Hot Wheels Unleashed. It is a solid product that has the potential to be something really cool. However, it all depends on whether the support of the creators will be more than just throwing cars from time to time as paid DLC and whether a community will be created around the game. If there is someone to play with online and people create new boards, I don’t see any problems with returning to this game often. It is such a simple and fun race with a climate and it would be great if it was successful.
