Ratchet & Clank Review: Rift Apart

There are series of games that don’t disappoint and are guaranteed to be a lot of fun. For me, such a cycle is the adventures of the galactic duo Ratchet and Clank. For nearly two decades I have been sitting with these games smiling from ear to ear. Will Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart continue this tradition? Or maybe Insomniac Games will have a leg?

The story of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart begins when the two heroes are finally rewarded for their efforts to save the galaxy. Ratchet and Clank are to be honored, and a great event has been prepared for their part. Unfortunately, the celebrations will not last long, because the party is interrupted by unannounced guests. As a result of the confusion, an accident breaks the stability between dimensions and our heroes are separated. Now, together with their companions from the new dimension, the heroes have to defeat the forces of evil and save the universe from destruction.

Rivet and Ratchet.

The history of Rift Apart is relatively simple and shows us another adventure of the invincible duo. This time, however, new characters also enter the game. Rivet and Kit are sort of the counterparts of Ratchet and Clank from the new dimension.

Good old Ratchet

Ratchet & Clank gameplay is 70% shooter and 30% platform game. It is similar in the case of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. We spend most of the game shooting enemies and avoiding their missiles. From time to time we will show off our acrobatic skills. We have various platforms, attachment points, running walls and some simple traps. There is nothing complicated in this respect and the platform segments are not the slightest challenge.

Guns, guns, guns

The fact that Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is mainly an action game with a lot of shooting is evidenced by the fact that during the game there will be as many as 20 weapons in our arsenal. We have a hammer or a giant Frenchman, cannons, shotguns, rocket launchers, sniper rifle and other standard guns. In addition, we summon mushrooms that shoot at enemies, freeze them, turn them into flowers and water or cover them with a ton of small blades fired from our popper. The arsenal is large, diverse and, in addition, we can improve it by defeating enemies and exchanging special crystals for various buffs.

This system has been working so well for years, mainly due to how much attention the creators pay attention not only to the weapons themselves, but also to make the improvements interesting and meaningful. Weapons on the fifth tier with all upgrades bought are practically something completely new compared to the counterpart on the first tier. The shooting itself is also first class, and there is probably no other game that gives you so much satisfaction in pulling the trigger. There are always loads of enemies and there is always something going on on the screen. Especially when our rifle spits thousands of colored bullets, our robots are flying on the battlefield and the enemy is frozen.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is one big show. We are constantly watching breathtaking scenes and simply great moments. Something explodes, collapses, explodes. There is something going on all the time and we are constantly on the move, avoiding enemy missiles and shooting almost blindly. It is difficult to describe how much joy it all makes. In my opinion, no title does this better than the adventures of Ratchet and Clank.

A feast for the eyes

The audiovisual setting of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is at a really decent level. This is one of the prettiest titles that works great in action. We have the ability to play 60FPS, where the game flashes, but we have to reckon with worse resolution. There is also a better resolution mode with additional graphics, but the number of displayed frames then drops to 30. I played in the first variant and I did not notice that the game lost much due to the worse resolution.

Beautiful landscapes.

It’s nice that Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, like Returnal, uses the features offered by the Dual Sense pad. Send the loudspeaker during the game, the vibrations are mega and the possibility of pressing the triggers only half way is well used by the available guns.

It could have been even better

When it comes to flaws or some flaws, the game has a bit of glitch and bugs. However, there is nothing that will ruin the fun. If I were to force myself to pick on two things, two things come to my mind. Weapons around here could be even better. Some really crazy new ideas are missing. We’ve already seen everything in some version in previous parts. It is a pity there is not much news. And what’s missing is the disco ball, which was a hugely fun weapon in previous games. Maybe I want a little too much, because after all we are talking about 20 guns already available in the game?

The second point is that the game does not fully exploit the potential of the various dimensions. This is because the story focuses on a new character, Rivet, and she is actually the main character. As a result, we spend most of our adventure with her and Clank. The title characters are separated and there is not much interaction between them. It makes sense and is quite an interesting procedure. It is a pity, however, that the theme of alternate versions of characters is so cursory. Captain Qwark and his alternate version appear in the game, but it’s just a temporary gag. It is a pity that a little more space has not been devoted to this. The last thing I will stick to is the relatively small amount of stuff to do in the game. We have a bit of variety thanks to the puzzles with Clank or the shooting game inside the computer, where we hunt viruses. There are also some flying sections in the style of Panzer Dragoon. However, I have the impression that the game is a bit disappointing in this respect. There are very few additions to diversify the gameplay. In addition, things like the arena, which have made the cycle more pleasant for years, are only a substitute for what we know from previous editions. There are no additional missions, challenges or more things to accomplish. The game just seems shorter than its predecessors. Me platinum. So it basically took about 10 hours to get everything done in the game. We have access to the New Game + mode as standard, where two new weapons are added to the game, and we can further strengthen our guns, but it’s a bit too little.

On the other hand, I’m talking about 10 hours of blistering fun and I didn’t get bored for a second. That’s probably why I want more and I wish this title never ended. Seriously, the new Ratched pulled me in like hardly any game and immediately after finishing the game I started the game again.

It’s definitely worth it

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a safe continuation of the popular series. I don’t mean anything bad. Quite simply, the latest title delivers exactly what you can expect from the series about Lombax and his fighter comrade. As a fan of these games, I am very pleased with this state of affairs. Especially that some time has passed since the last installment of the series and I missed the cosmic duo. Studio Insomniac delivers something great once again with spectacular moments, humor and brilliant gameplay. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart may not be a revolution, but it is at the forefront of the current generation. I think you can say that it is a must have for all PlayStation 5 owners.

Rivet Fast and the Furious Non stop the action.
