The sequel to the Shining Force tactical RPG series, Shining Force: Heroes of Light and Darkness, has been announced. Development will be handled by studio Hive, the Japanese arm of the popular South Korean game publisher Vespa. (Fun fact: Vespa means “wasp” in Italian, and the name of the studio is Hive, in English “beehive.”
The series is really very respectable – the first part of it, the RPG Shining in the Darkness, was released on the Sega Genesis in 1991. It was followed by the actual Shining Force (1992, Sega MegaDrive). Not much is known about the new part – only the trailer, and even that one in Korean. But the gameplay is shown.
In terms of mechanics, Shining Force is a turn-based tactical RPG in the spirit of Fire Emblem, with movement “on cells” and a large selection of fighters. In the trailer of the new part, I was especially pleased with the presence of non-standard races – both dragons already seen in the same FE, and centaur centaurs and upright skaven rats! Shining-Wikipedia suggests that there are many races in the game’s universe – from kyantols (humanoid furry-style dog-people) to half-blood werewolves, fox monkeys and bird-men.
Shining Force: Heroes of Light and Darkness has been announced so far only for mobile devices (Android, iOS). It will be distributed free-to-play. Another gacha, eh, as if they are not enough for us!
On the other hand, the graphics are good, the gameplay looks smooth and pleasant, so let’s wait to judge. In the end, the same free-to-play Fire Emblem Heroes is a good mobile strategy game that you can safely play without any donation.
The approximate release date for the game on mobile devices is the first half of 2022.
