Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 review for Nintendo Switch. The hawk in the pocket is up to the task

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 originally made its debut on Windows PCs, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One last summer, becoming an instant success – both in terms of ratings and earnings. It is not surprising, after all, both parts are cult scenes from years ago, on which many current players grew up – the sense of nostalgia brought about by this production influenced its reception in a positive way. However, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 was refreshed so well that even younger players who had not had any experience with this classic of the genre before, could experience it in extremely decent conditions. I must admit that the hype for this title reached me.

Less than a year has passed and the creators decided to transfer their work to Nintendo Switch. This information caused ambivalent emotions in me. On the one hand, I was very happy, after all, I love the Switch for many reasons and this console is my second main gaming platform, which is why I have lost hundreds of hours on it, and I spent a lot of time with Tony on other platforms. On the other hand, I was worried about somehow this port, because unfortunately we all know how the games from “big” consoles look on the newest Nintendo console – it’s bad not to write hopelessly, as evidenced not only by such extreme cases as, for example, DOOM Eternal, because even the recently released Destroy All Humans! looks simply weak on the Switch. In the case of Tony … I was positively surprised. In this text, I will focus on the quality of the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 port on the Nintendo Switch. If you are interested in an in-depth analysis of the gameplay, I encourage you to read Cassian’s review.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 on Switch is a successful port. Vicarious Visions did a great job

The key element for me in the case of ports on Switch is whether the content of the game is the same as on other platforms. It sounds stupid, but unfortunately switch versions of games are very often very limited, a great example of which is FIFA 21 – this title in the Nintendo version does not contain even 25% of the content from the PC, PlayStation or Xbox edition. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 will not disappoint players in this way, because despite being a big title (I would like to remind you that this is a remake of two games that are combined into one production), it is on the Switch in its entirety, including modernized mechanics compared to the original or extended soundtrack, but we’ll come back to that later. But most of all, Tony on the Switch works just fine. During the game, I did not notice any drops in liquidity or major cuts – and this is key.Graphics, so we had to compromise

However, it cannot be denied that it is the graphics that attract attention when you first start the game. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 had to give up something to run flawlessly on the Switch. And well, it’s a sacrifice I’m definitely willing to make. Sure, the portable version of Tony cannot compare to what we will see when launching the game on PC or next-gen consoles – the textures are evidently less sharp and detailed, some elements are blurry or single-colored, and the lighting effects are practically non-existent here, but during riding a board on a shopping mall or the roof of a sports hall, it ceases to matter. The artwork goes sidetrack and in the frenzy of doing tricks to beat the target or looking for all the wooden boxes to destroy, I don’t look at the texture of a nearby wall. Because the graphics, although the quality does not match their counterparts on “large” equipment, is not ugly at all.

It is different if we are talking about music – this one is simply COVERED. However, this is not a discovery, after all, games with the title character are associated mainly with the phenomenal soundtrack. I must admit that the soundtrack drew me in so much that songs from Tony accompany me every day on my headphones or while driving. That’s a great thing.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater is fun for hundreds of hours, also on Nintendo Switch

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 on Switch has all the locations, all the skaters and even the multiplayer mode, including the split screen one! Both parts have loads of levels in total with even more quests to complete. This, combined with a lot of various tricks, creating amazing combos and breaking world records, gives you hundreds of hours of fun. Unlocking new characters is also a lot of fun, and competing with friends online or through the couch multiplayer is incredibly addictive. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 is simply a mine of great fun.

The gameplay of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 on Nintendo Switch is smooth

Tony Hawk on Switch runs at a constant 30fps. Although the new generation consoles achieve results of 60 or even 120 FPS, this is definitely a sufficient result. It is worth noting, however, that if you mainly care about stationary gameplay, it is better to reach for the version for other equipment. In my opinion, however, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 on Nintendo Switch is a great choice, because nothing long ago gave me as much fun as Tony tucked in my pocket, which I can play everywhere.

Apart from the graphic layer, the only element that I could find fault with are the loadings. All the anger after loading disappears in the first 10 seconds of boarding, because, as I mentioned, the gameplay is really nice.

Is Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 worth buying for Nintendo Switch?

Definitely yes. This game is perfect for handhelds, because it works perfectly for short sessions lasting several minutes. My concerns about the quality of the port turned out to be unnecessary and I have to give the Emperor my imperial duties, as Vicarious Visions rose to the occasion and provided one of the most decent ports available on the Nintendo Switch. 30 FPS is definitely enough to play in portable mode, the graphics, although worse, do not beat the eyes at all – and let’s agree, the ability to play the classic versions of the Hawk and listen to this wonderful soundtrack anywhere is something that makes an impression. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 on Nintendo Switch is a great game that will bring a lot of fun in many modes … and above all, it will allow you to experience a really enjoyable gameplay on the latest Nintendo console. If you are fans of the series and you have a Switch, do not hesitate. I assure you that you will not be disappointed. All the anger after loading disappears in the first 10 seconds of boarding, because, as I mentioned, the gameplay is really nice.
